Apprentice of the Year

What’s it all about?

The Apprentice of the Year competition recognises and celebrates excellence among young carpentry apprentices. The Apprentice of the Year competition also promotes building and construction career opportunities and raises awareness of the benefits for employers who take on apprentices. The principal sponsor is Carters, along with sponsorship and support from the Registered Master Builders Federation (RMBF), the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO), and the Department of Building and Housing (DBH).

What does a past winner think?

2010 national winner, Isaac Alder of Russell Bruce Contract Builders in Nelson, is optimistic for the future.
“I want to use my skills now to help people, like going in after a natural disaster and helping to rebuild, or being a part of Habitat for Humanity,” says Isaac.

How does the competition work?

Entrants will be interviewed by a judging panel and up to 10 regional finalists will be short listed based on their written application and an interview. The judging panel will then undertake a site visit to each of the 10 finalists in each region before the regional winner and place getters are announced at regional events in September. The 10 regional winners then compete for the National Apprentice of the Year title. Judging takes place over two days and includes a 45-minute interview with the national judging panel and a practical test.

The winner of the National Apprentice of the Year title will be announced at an awards evening following national judging on Friday, October 26.

What could YOU win?

In addition to regional and national winner’s titles, there is over $100,000 in prize value up for grabs.
